Scuba diving in Hawaii

Hawai'i is a wonderful place to Dive and watch marine life.  The warm, clear water is just the beginnning of discovering that 25% of the Hawaiian fish species are endemic, meaning they are only found in Hawai'i.
Hawaii Green_Sea_TurtleHawaii Green Sea Turtle
Not many places in the world compare with Hawai'i in numbers of unique species, and none has more.  It's estimated that 600 different species of tropical fish live here.  Scientists believe that most marine life, even those of the Caribbean, originated near to what is now The Philippines and Hawaiian-IslandsIndonesia.  Marine animals and plants spread slowly from those areas, moving from island to island or along the shores of continents.  Some even managed to cross the ocean drifting as a larvae in the ocean's currents, until finding a new home and helping to create the paradise we now know as Hawai'i. Crossing the oceans was just the first step in the arduous journey to become the beautiful creatures we appreciate today.  Having arrived in Hawaiian waters, these species went through a process of developing and adapting to a new ecosystem.  Many perished due to lack of food and an unfavorable habitat.  The species that survived procreated with other species, therefore giving birth to a series of unique species found only in majestic Hawai'i.  The occurrence of a unique species in a limited geographical area is called endemism.

ocean-girl-project-reef-fish-hawaiiHawai'i is also home to the migration patterns Humpback whales.  These magnificent beasts are commonly seen in the winter months from our shores, and are easily heard on many of our dives.  These Humpback whales come to the warm waters of Hawai'i to breed, calve, and nurse their young.Nice hawak_fish_menor

It is hard to dive anywhere in Hawai'i and not spot a Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle.  They are everywhere!  These turtles were once an endandaged species and now exist in large numbers.  Many of our dive sites on the Islands of Hawai'i have their own turtle cleaning stations.  We scuba divers love it!  One in particular is the Turtle Car Wash, located on the North Shore of Oahu, home of Hawaii Eco Divers.

Turtle Car_Wash_classica_2Turtle Car WashHawai'i is also home to many Sharks. The White Tip Reef Shark and the Grey Reef Shark are the most commom species seen by divers. If you want to see some other types of sharks such as Galapagos, Black Tip, Sand Bar, and Tiger Sharks, we can help you to find your way into a shark cage through our network in Haleiwa.

humpback-whaleRays are also commonly seen in the waters of Hawaii.  In Kona, on the Big Island, you can dive with the giant Manta Rays at night.  One of the amazing wreck dives on O'ahu is called The Mahi.  This dive is frequently visited by a squadron of Eagle Rays.

Dolphins are divers' best friends, and they exist on all of the shores of Hawai'i.  The spinner dolphins are the most common.  They usually swim in large numbers and are easily spotted for being very playful and happy, on the west side of O'ahu where the action happens every day.  We have had to pause our open water class, at a training site called Electric Beach, to watch the dolphins cruising by.

The Hawaiian Monk Seal is a perfect example of an endemic species that only exist in Hawai'i.  It is also the most endangered marine mammal located entirely within U.S. waters.  SpinnerSpotted-WOWThe total remaining population of the Hawaiian Monk Seal is approximately 1,200.  Tourists often see them resting on beaches and divers sometimes come accross this intriguing animal underwater.

Many other types of marine life are often seen by scuba divers in Hawai'i such as eels, octopus, crabs, lobsters, shimps, nudibranch, and numerous types of shells, corals and much more!

O'ahu is the capital of shipwrecks in Hawai'i.  In the waters of Pearl Harbor rest dozens of airplanes and shipwrecks from World War II and other tragic events.  Diving is off limits here, but many other famous wrecks are visited by divers.  A few of them include The Sea Tiger, Yo-257, San Pedro, Corsair, L.C.U., Barges, 29 Down, and Mahi.

Oahu also offers a great variety of dives including wall diving, drift diving, deep diving, shore diving and an amazing underwater topography with caves, caverns, coral reefs, and numerous lava tubes on the North Shore. Hawaii is definitely a diving paradise.cgalapagdiag big
